Maria Kostantinova Scerstiukova (1740 – 1822)

Born in Biriuci, from Belgorod, from a poor family of Cossack origin, after being widowed at a young age gave their children to the neighbors and devoted himself to drink and debauchery. To make their living had begun the healing profession. In 1795, shaken by repentance for his dissolute life, He sets off on a pilgrimage to Kiev, where he visited the Pechersk Lavra remaining amazed dall'alacrità the monks' work, day after day, new caves dug through the mountain Berestov. On his return to Belgorod, It took place a year later, Maria began alone to dig a cave on a mountain site not far from the city, soon attracting the curiosity of the inhabitants of the surrounding territory, some of whom came to help, driven by the desire of purification through the hassle. Then he began his life of “Proud in Christ”, as well as those which are called, following the evangelical letter (1^ Letter to the Corinthians 1:18-24, 2:14, 3:18-19) lived charity simulating madness, despising his own body and believing thus to take part in the Passion of Christ.
